About us
Hello from Kirchner, Fischer & Co! How nice that you appreciate premium tea and have therefore logically found our family business.
We are now in our 9th generation of trading loose leaf teas, the top products on the world market. Founded in Hamburg in 1793, our constant progress has made us the oldest tea importer on the European mainland. A Hanseatic handshake to all those who make this sustainable achievement possible every day. It would be great if you could share this success with us. Get to know our company better.
Sustainable – since 1793
‘Oldest active tea trading house on the European mainland’ – at first glance, this superlative seems quite impressive. However, what we find really remarkable is the significant events in the tea trade that our family business has witnessed and played a key role in.
Because Kirchner, Fischer & Co
is actually older, …
• … older than Hamburg’s Speicherstadt! The UNESCO World Heritage Site with its iconic red-brick warehouses was built from 1883.
• … older than the Darjeeling tea variety! The first tea gardens in India were planted in the 1840s.
• … older than the Suez Canal! Its opening in 1869 signalled the end of the era of the legendary tea clipper races around the African continent.
Kirchner, Fischer & Co has survived massive economic and historical changes for well over 200 years – and has always remained in family hands. On 1 April 1993, the 9th generation took over the management of the company with the aim of passing on a flourishing business to the next generation.
Trusting family relationships with employees, suppliers and customers
Of course, long-term success requires more than ‘just’ family cohesion: above all, the trusting relationship between management, employees, suppliers and customers has characterised and sustained Kirchner, Fischer & Co over the centuries. We see taking responsibility for each other as sustainable – since 1793! And you can certainly imagine: The shared pleasure of a good cup of tea helps immensely.
In the spirit of Hanseatic merchants, we manage our company sustainably in an economic, ecological and social balance, coupled with a willingness to take risks and innovative strength. While the tea plant Camellia sinensis initially took centre stage, today we also offer you all tea-like products that meet our premium quality standards.
Ecological responsibility for people, animals and nature
Fortunately, the demand for organic food is increasing. Many of our suppliers can afford to convert their tea gardens and farms to environmentally friendly cultivation methods. At Kirchner, Fischer & Co, you will therefore find organic ingredients even in tea blends that are not yet certified organic as end products. We are also increasingly focussing on recycled and recyclable materials in our comprehensive range of packaging, without neglecting food safety.
Maintaining curiosity, openness and integrity
We love good blends – also in human interaction: our team of tea tasters, for example, is characterised by young creatives and experienced ‘orthodox’ tea tasters. The best FTGFOP1s of the season are found in our sample room with a completely open mind, while a trendy chewing gum tea is created in the sample room next door. Incidentally, a popular fruit tea blend was composed by one of our warehouse employees. Inspiration comes from identification!
Our profession is also international. We encounter a great diversity of languages, temperaments and cultures in the producing countries, this is reflected in our sales staff and is also evident in our customer base all over the world. Our honest openness contributes to the fact that Kirchner, Fischer & Co generates the majority of its sales in other European countries in addition to long-standing customers in Germany – and the number of satisfied customers is growing worldwide.
Understanding and communication at eye level, fairness and integrity in co-operation – these are the cornerstones on which Kirchner, Fischer & Co has always been based. Added to this are the foresight and agility of an owner-managed medium-sized company, which is also reflected in our historical development:

The association and its members are aware of the existing challenges. For this reason, a code of conduct has been drawn up and signed, the main parts of which can be read here:
Code of Conduct of the German Tea & Herbal Tea Association – Extract
1. Compliance with the applicable laws of sovereign states
The Association and its members recognise the applicable laws and regulations of sovereign states. Every effort will be made to enforce compliance with these laws and regulations in the supply chain.
This includes minimum standards on freedom of association, collective bargaining, organisation of employee representation, minimum wages, working time regulations, prevention of discrimination, health and safety in the workplace.
2. Business integrity
The business behaviour of the signatories and their employees is free from unfair practices.
The signatories may not demand or accept gratuities or other benefits from third parties in connection with their activities, either for themselves or for other persons, or grant third parties inappropriate benefits.
The signatories shall not enter into any agreements that lead to a restriction of free competition.
3. Working conditions
3.1 Remuneration
The wages and social benefits paid to employees must comply with applicable laws, binding collective labour agreements and individual contracts as well as statutory minimum wage regulations and should be suitable to cover the basic needs of employees.
3.2 Child labour
The use of exploitative child labour along the entire value chain, from cultivation to trade, is strictly prohibited. Child labour is defined as work performed by children that poses a mental, physical, social or moral danger or harm to the children and is contrary to their educational needs. In principle, all minimum requirements in accordance with ILO 138 and 182 must be applied.
3.3 Forced labour
No forced labourers or workers otherwise obliged to work under pressure shall be used in an exploitative manner, nor shall any other form of profit be made from such use. Corporal punishment, deprivation of liberty, threats of violence or other forms of bullying or abuse as a means of obtaining discipline or control are not permitted.
The use of workers who are the subject of an official prisoner rehabilitation programme is not considered a breach of the Code.
3.4 Occupational health and safety
Every supplier within the value chain must offer its employees/workers safe and healthy working conditions and have regulated, for example, the handling of hazardous substances, fire protection measures and occupational health and safety on machinery.
The minimum requirement is the provision of clean drinking water, adequate sanitary facilities and access to medical care.
4. Environment
The signatories support and promote sustainable and responsible farming and cultivation methods.
Methods of agricultural utilisation, the use and handling of energy resources, waste water treatment and waste management must meet or exceed the legal requirements.
This applies in particular to the protection of water, soil, plant diversity and animals and therefore the lowest possible and most responsible use of pesticides and fertilisers in cultivation.
